Describe an ordinary Tuesday rather than your ideal weekend. How much time can you give to walks, training, rest and coat care? Who will help during illness, travel or changes at work?
Home size is only one factor. Reliable outings, opportunities to rest and support you can actually count on matter more. If you choose a puppy, also plan the first weeks with puppy training and settling in.
02
Compare needs rather than labels
Size alone does not determine energy. A small dog may have a strong hunting interest and need substantial enrichment. A large dog may settle well indoors yet require more space for safe handling and a larger budget.
Breed gives clues about likely needs, not a promise of behaviour. Observe the dog itself: can they move away calmly, seek contact and recover after a small change?
Ask the breeder or rescue for honest information about the environment, habits and known difficulties. Avoid frightening or noisy tests. Explore training shaped around temperament.
04
Puppy or adult dog?
A puppy needs frequent care, toilet training and gradual development of independence. An adult may have a better-known temperament and routine, although settling into a new home still needs time.
Buying and adopting both deserve careful checks. Meet the dog, ask about health and living conditions, and discuss support after the move. For uncertainties, explore individual consultation options.
05
Questions to ask before buying
Which health checks have been completed, and can you see the records?
Where do puppies grow up and how do they encounter everyday sounds?
Can you meet their mother and see the environment?
What do the contract, veterinary passport and ongoing care plan include?
Who can you contact if you need help?
Do not choose under pressure to pay immediately. Discuss health records with your veterinarian and budget for food, preventive care, optional insurance, training and unexpected costs.
06
Plan your first month
Agree where the dog will sleep, who will provide walks and how risky areas will be managed. Use consistent household rules and a quiet space that children cannot access freely without supervision.
Your choice continues after day one. Maintain routines, observe adjustment and adapt the plan to the individual. Find practical topics in our care and training guides.
